One third of the industry's sales of children's toys, models and puzzles have been sold to older generations. In 2021, the sales value of model train related products reached 23.8 million pounds in the UK alone.
In Struer Museum, a group of retired volunteers are assembling a scale model of the city's railway station as it stood in the 1950's. A mixture of hobbyists, inventors, curious families and salesmen come together in the middle of Denmark to attend one of the country's biggest model conventions. And every Sunday, a model train museum opens it doors to families and enthusiasts alike.
But why do these older men dedicate so much of their free time to these tiny replicas of trains? Is it a way to reconnect with a long gone childhood? And who exactly are these people?
